Title A name given to the resource Ralph Tomases, DDS Description An account of the resource In this interview, Dr. Ralph Tomases discusses his childhood in Wilmington during the Great Depression, attending the University of Delaware in the early 1940’s, and his experience as a prisoner of war in World War II. Dr. Tomases earned his dental degree in 1943 and was then inducted into the army, and in 1944 was sent to Europe as a dental officer in the 106th Infantry Division. His unit was stationed on the Belgian-German frontier when the Battle of the Bulge began, and his unit was captured by the German army. Dr. Tomases discusses his experience as a POW, conditions and life in the POW camp, and being liberated by Russian army. Title A name given to the resource Leo & Sybil Zeftel Subject The topic of the resource Leo & Sybil Zeftel Description An account of the resource Leo Zeftel (1925-1999) was an organic chemist involved in the negotiations that resulted in an international chemical weapons treaty, ratified by the U.S. in 1997, and worked to raise awareness of the dangers of chemical weapons. He was deeply involved with the Jewish Federation of Delaware, serving the organization in various positions throughout his life. His wife, Syble Zeftel (1926-2018), was an educator and activist who taught mathematics in Wilmington public schools and had leadership positions in many organizations such as the National Council of Jewish Women and the League of Women Voters. Her interest in politics inspired her to participate in the civil rights movement, anti-war efforts, and – in her mid-80s – the Occupy Wall Street movement. In This interview, they discuss their early lives in Providence, Rhode Island, their careers, and their community involvement.
